A2R at the UN Climate Change Conference COP25

A2R Members are once again actively engaging in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) convened in Madrid between December 2nd and 13th. The Conference takes place under the Presidency of the Government of Chile and will focus on the full operationalization of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

Among other events, the A2R members are coordinating and organizing the Agri-Food and Resilience Roundtable under the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action (MPGCA) and the Development and Climate Days 2019.

The Agri-Food Roundtable event titled “Advancing Climate Actions on Resilient and Sustainable Agri-Food Chains for 1.5C Net Zero World” will take place on December 5th between 11:30 and 13:00 at the San Pedro de Atacama Room, at IFEMA, Madrid, Spain. Evidence has proven repeatedly an urgent transformation of our food and agriculture systems, including food value chains, to deliver a hunger free, prosperous and resilient 1.5C net zero world is needed. During the roundtable the five sets of benefits: Economic and livelihood benefits; healthy and well-nourished populations; resilient food and agriculture systems; reduced environmental impacts from food and agriculture systems; and reduced food loss and waste, will be discussed.

The Resilience Roundtable event titled “Acceleration Action to Build a Resilient 1.5C World” will take place on December 10th between 15:00 and 16:30, in the San Pedro de Atacama Hall 4, at IFEMA, Madrid, Spain. The event will discuss why resilience and adaptation is essential, why it is so urgent and why action on climate change is needed now. Following the Call for Action on Adaptation and Resilience issued at the UN Climate Action Summit in September this year, it is clear that many of the predicted impacts can be avoided with actions and investments into resilience. Concept notes and programmes for this and other MPGCA events can be found here.

This years Development and Climate Days (D&C Days) will be held on December 8th between 08:00 and 18:30 at the Hilton Madrid Airport Av de la Hispanidad, 2, 4, 28042 Madrid. Download the programme here. D&C days 2019 is focused on contributing to the debate on enhancing ambition and action to meet the  Paris Agreement commitments.  The multiple public, private and community partners are working together to create synergies and build on the call for action on resilience and adaptation at the UN Global Climate Action Summit (UNCAS) and the outcomes of the Building a Resilient Future Day, as well as the Global Commission on Adaptation and related UNFCCC events such as the regional climate weeks to inform the programme. Following an assessment of key issues linked to the UN Climate Action Summit and particularly to the full day event “Building a Resilient Future”, the D&C Days in 2019, will focus on five ‘evidenced themes’:

1.  Building resilient food and agriculture systems

2.  Early warning, Early Action to leave no one behind

3.  Financing a resilient future

4.  Establishing Resilient Cities, infrastructure and energy systems

5.  Working with Nature to build resilience

Increasing climate resilience for agriculture and food systems encompasses transformation and a recognition that agriculture and food systems are not just part of the problem, but an essential solution for tackling climate change through both carbon sequestration and climate resilient and sustainable agricultural policy and practices.
